Structured Cabling Solution for Top Public School

The Client

Our client for this project was voted ‘Public School of the Year’ in 2014. It is composed of a group of modern and listed buildings, both Grade 1 and 2, with one of the buildings dating to the Early Medieval Period all set in 300 acres of Park Land.

The Project Brief

The client approached Lineartron to upgrade their current data cabling to allow for a faster transmission of data across their site. They also wished for some of the already installed fibre optic cabling to be reterminated and tested as it was not performing as expected.

The Solution

With the aims of the project in mind, our engineers surveyed the site in order to produce an accurate plan of where the cables and outlets would be installed. Once the survey of the building was complete, our engineers specified the use of category 6 (Cat6) copper cabling. Compared with its predecessors, Cat5 and Cat5e, Cat6 cable has a reduced amount of crosstalk and system noise due to a higher level of cable insulation. Further, Cat6 cable can allow up to 10GBASE-T over reduced distances making it significantly faster than its predecessors. Our engineers installed the cable, outlets and patch panels, ensuring that the job was completed to a high standard and that all the cabling was fully functional.

After installing the new Cat6 data cables, our engineers reterminated the fibre optic cables already installed at the site with single mode fibre. Using our Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) our engineers then tested the previously installed fibres, as well as the newly installed ends, to ensure all the fibre cables had been correctly reterminated and were fully operational.
